The cost of cleaning

Endless choices all with a price tag

I went to stay with my sister when she was housesitting a nice house in Sydney close to the beach. We both noticed that although the house was not seriously grubby or disgusting it needed a good clean. We wanted to clean the house to give the house a lovely inviting feeling and make our stay more relaxing and enjoyable. We found plenty of choices, the cupboard under the kitchen sink and the laundry cupboard were teeming with cleaning products. Seeing the range of commercial sprays, powders and mixtures for every conceivable cleaning problem my sister wryly stated “the more cleaning products, the less cleaning happens”. People have good intentions to clean and acquire products to do the job. They feel better just buying the product and somehow don’t get round to the actual cleaning. After all, who enjoys cleaning? There was quite an investment in all the barely used cleaning products. That’s the thing all the money spent on cleaning. Basically my sister and I use water, bi-carb soda and vinegar to clean. Minimal cost. Remember the ‘ragbag’? Old clothes ended up in the ragbag. These rags were used for all the cleaning jobs. Nowdays rags have been replaced by  microfibres. Whereas rags were free, microfibres are expensive. Don’t waste money on cleaning products, a clean house can be achieved at minimal expense. Of course one could argue that the best way to save money is not clean at all!!
