Last weekend I spend on Rottnest Island. I took my bicycle with me on the ferry. All I needed for the weekend was packed into my panniers (saddlebags) and a backpack and then I cycled from home to the quay. One great advantage was by riding my bike I avoided the pricey car parking fees at the quay especially as I spent two nights on Rottnest. What I also loved about having my bicycle was the freedom it allowed me to ride wherever I wanted to go on the island when it suited me. And of course getting fresh air and exercise while I enjoyed the scenery with the wind in my hair and sun shining on my face was very beneficial. It was even exhilarating to race back to shelter to beat the oncoming storm. Rottnest Island is perfect for cyclists as cars are not permitted hence there is no traffic apart from the bus that takes tourists around. You feel as if you have the roads to yourself. For me having a bike is essential. I get around practically everywhere by bike even during the evenings. In Fremantle where I live, finding a vacant car park is a challenge and none of them are free anyway. When I need to go into the City I cycle to the train station and lock my bike in the station’s free bike cage. One last thing is I have a Norco bicycle. I find this interesting as Norco was a common brand of butter when I was young. Bicycles and butter; two things I can’t live without!
